Support Category 5 as they DIVE into FIRST Robotic Competition Reefscape Season
Young Scientists of South Carolina proudly supports several high school-level robotics teams. Your contributions enable FIRST Robotics Competition Team Category 5 (Team 3489 and 10367 ) to design and build a competitive robot for the 2024-2025 season. The team plans to attend five key events for the Reefscape Season. Your support covers the cost for event fees, transportation, lodging, meals, materials and resources for the robot build, support community outreach, and continue fostering STEM skills in the Lowcountry.
Established in 2010, Category 5 has grown in strength and impact, much like the hurricane that inspires its name. With guidance from dedicated mentors, the team is driven by student leaders who connect across all FIRSTⓇ programs and engage in more than just outreach—building a legacy of STEM excellence and innovation.
We’re not just preparing for the storm; we are the storm! Watch out for Category 5 as we blow past expectations and redefine what it means to be a student-led and mentor-guided team.
Our Mission and Impact
The team is committed to empowering students to take the lead in all aspects of operations, from designing and building the robot to making critical decisions about outreach, strategy, and business development. This approach equips team members with skills and confidence that extend far beyond robotics competitions.
Over the past five years, the team has dedicated more than 13,451 hours to outreach, promoting STEM growth throughout the Lowcountry. From hosting events to volunteering at FIRST-specific initiatives, Category 5 is at the forefront of building a stronger, more innovative community.
Our Structure
Category 5 is organized into five sub-teams:
- Electrical
- Mechanical
- Programming
- Business
- Drive Team
Each sub-team has a dedicated mentor or mentors to support the student lead and members. Student leaders work together in a collaborative committee, ensuring all sub-teams are aligned and informed about robot development, outreach efforts, and business opportunities. Within each sub-team, smaller specialized groups focus on specific tasks, promoting teamwork and innovation at every level.
Your support makes all of this possible. Join us in empowering the next generation of STEM leaders and innovators.
