Category 5 is going to Worlds

Young Scientist of South Carolina supports several high school level teams, your support and contributions will enable FIRST Robotics Competition, Category 5 (Team 3489) to design, build a robot for the 2023-2024 competition season, travel to attend events, cover event fees, support community events, and continue to build their STEM skills.

Category 5, team 3489, was established in 2010 with a series of objectives in mind, but just as a hurricane grows in strength, we, as a team, grow stronger, and so must our team’s reach. Through mentor guidance, our student leads are able to increase the team’s reach and influence by connecting across all FIRST Ⓡ programs, through more than just outreach. Watch out for Category 5, we’re a storm in your backyard, ready to blow you off your feet!!

The team is focusing on becoming student-led and mentor-guided, with students making final choices about team decisions having to do with every aspect of the team. The goal is to enable the members of the team to learn and become proficient in their jobs on the team, instead of depending on the mentors. We have promoted STEM growth within the lowcountry through many initiatives from outreach to FIRST- specific events that we have hosted and volunteered in. The team put in 13,451 hours of outreach over the past half-decade.

Organizational Structure:
The team consists of five sub-teams: Electrical, Mechanical, Programming, Business, and Drive Team. Each sub-team has a dedicated mentor, or mentors to provide guidance to the elected student lead and the other students. The student leads come together to form a committee that constantly communicates to make sure the divisions are aware of changes to the robot and/or outreach/business opportunities. Finally, each sub-team has two to five subdivisions that are more specialized and work individually, communicating with each other and the student lead.
